Helicobacter pylori Test & Treatment

It is said that 1 in 3 Japanese people are infected.

Helicobacter pylori is a major cause of gastric cancer and stomach ulcers. International guidelines recommend eradication as soon as it is detected. If you have persistent symptoms such as stomach pain or acid reflux, testing is recommended. The infection rate is known to increase particularly among people over 50 years old.

There are two main types of tests for H. pylori: endoscopic and non-endoscopic. At our clinic, we use non-endoscopic methods such as blood tests, urine tests, and stool antigen tests.

However, insurance coverage for treatment requires an endoscopic diagnosis of chronic gastritis or gastric ulcer within the past year. If no endoscopic exam has been conducted or no findings are present, treatment will be self-paid.

This is a simple and highly accurate test used to determine whether you are currently infected with H. pylori. It is performed using a urine sample, and results can be provided within 15–20 minutes.

Note: Women on their menstrual period cannot undergo this test. Please schedule your visit accordingly.

This is also a simple and highly accurate test used to determine whether you are currently infected with H. pylori.
It is performed through a blood sample, and results will be reported at a later date.

This test is used to accurately confirm whether eradication therapy for H. pylori has been successful.

The test is performed by collecting breath samples before and after taking the test solution. It takes about 30 minutes, so please allow sufficient time.

Please note that the test cannot be performed unless the following conditions are met:

Precautions Before the Urea Breath Test

  • The test can only be performed at least 4 weeks after eradication treatment.
  • Do not take antibiotics or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for at least 2 weeks prior to the test.
  • Avoid eating or drinking for at least 4 hours before the test. (Water and tea are allowed, but not within 1 hour before the test.)
  • Refrain from smoking for at least 30 minutes before the test.

Treatment is performed with oral medication (Bonosup®, Bonopion®) for one week. Eradication of H. pylori involves taking a combination of two types of antibiotics and a stomach medicine for one week.

Four weeks later, eradication is assessed, and if bacteria remain, treatment is switched to different antibiotics for an additional one week.

With the development of new medications, the success rate of eradication has exceeded 95%.
